What to Do With a Stain Before You Bring It In
When something spills, the instinct is often to scrub it immediately. That can spread the stain or push it deeper into the fabric.
1Blot, do not rub
Use a clean white cloth or paper towel and gently blot up as much as you can. Rubbing can spread the stain and damage delicate fibers.
2Be careful with heat
Hot water and dryers can set some stains. Unless you know the fabric and stain can handle heat, it is safer not to experiment.
3Skip random stain removers on delicate clothes
Strong household products can discolor fabric or react badly with dyes. Delicate, dry-clean-only, silk, wool, and embellished pieces are better brought in as-is.
